The Serenity Collector's Edition DVD ~
The Good News: The Collector's Edition of the Serenity DVD was released August 21st, 2007. The Gooder News: This release of the Collector's Edition is in response to the excellent sales of the regular DVD. The Extra Gooder News, with Sprinkles: Mr. Joss Whedon himself has stated that healthy sales of the CE DVD could very well be the thing to persuade Universal to greenlight more Serenity. Now we're talkin'!
So let's get busy and promote the heck out of the Serenity Collector's Edition DVD! Every DVD sold brings us closer to more of the 'Verse. Shiny, very shiny.
New Guerilla Marketing Items ~ Bookmarks!
In response to this renewed vigor to fight the good fight, I've created a new division of promotional items: Guerilla Marketing Bookmarks! Small, handy, useful, yet still power packed with plenty of Serenity promotional pleasure. The bonus is that you can get 5 bookmarks per letter size page, which muliplies the word spreadin' potential. Also, the bookmarks are something useful, and can be placed where people would find them handy:
Schools
Libraries
Book Stores
Coffee Houses
Comic Book Shops
and more, use your imagination!
People often need something to mark a place in what they're reading or writing, or maybe just need a piece of paper to make a note. These are eye catching and grabable, and once people have them they're bound to read them. The message will sink in!
There are two different bookmark page designs, each fits on a regular letter size page, and each can make 5 bookmarks. The first set is designed visually like the guerilla marketing posters. The other set is text oriented, and features several glowing reviews of the Serenity CE DVD. Below that is a blurb showing the recent acting credits of Nathan, Summer, Adam and Alan. The theory being that for people who aren't familiar with the cast, they would be impressed with a roster of their accomplishments. This could be additionally persuasive for new folk to check out the DVD.
The bookmark designs can be used three different ways: One sided photocopies using either the graphic designs, or the "reviews" design. Or, if you're feeling especially ambitious, do two sided photocopies for bookmarks that have the graphics on one side and the reviews on the reverse!
Each page has small guide marks at the top and bottom to show where to cut into five equal strips. A paper cutter is recommended for speed and straight edges. As with the posters, using colored paper will really help give the bookmarks more impact!
Bookmarks can be very effective, they are something to hold in the hand, up close and draw a more quiet, direct attention. Plus they are made to be items that people use when they're taking a break to read a book, have some coffee, or do some writing. That's a great opportunity to make a quiet, direct connection with someone when their attention is more focused. These are items anyone can make, and it feels good to spread the word. Future fans will be so glad you did!
~ Web Banners to Promote the Serenity Collector's Edition DVD! ~
You can also help spread the word on the web! Use these nifty banners to tell folks about the DVD. Several sizes to choose from... use them on websites and include them in your signature lines!

FOUR POSTERS TO A PAGE — These are the same posters, shrunk down, and combined as four "mini" posters per letter size page. Multiply your paper power x 4!
HOW YOU SLICE IT — Just print out and copy as usual. Then cut crossways. Works great with a paper cutter, and you can cut several at once in small stacks. There are even small guidelines on the page for help in lining up the cutting.
WAYS TO USE THEM — Great, handy size for carrying with you, ready to hand out to people when you talk about Firefly/Serenity. Or for placing out in "high traffic areas" for people to pick up. Small size is attractive for picking up... very portable and convenient, yet still carries the message. All kinds of ways to use the minis — just use your imagination. :-)
I've personally given out LOTS of the mini posters and people LOVE them! Plus, they are a useful way of getting four "posters" per each sheet of paper... nifty!
Use these links to download files to PRINT mini posters:
Large and regular size posters are great for placing in high visibility areas to get the attention of large numbers of people passing by. Mini posters are really great for more "one on one" interaction with people... and for leaving in areas where larger posters would not fit. There's something for every occasion!
Guerilla Marketing is a BLAST!
Posters are EASY to make ~
DOWNLOAD ——> Click on the "poster for PRINTING" link for the poster you want... this will download it to your browser. Then just save the file to your hard drive. Voila! You have it. (If for some reason the poster image does not initially appear in your browser window, then try "Save as Target" function after clicking the link.)
PRINT ——> Just print out one original on white paper (no color printer required) and use this to make AS MANY photocopies as you want!
COPY ——> Use bold colored paper for the copies to really make the posters JUMP -- They'll be extra eye-catching! (Just avoid dark colored paper as it doesn't give a good enough contrast.) Bright "neon" colors like orange, yellow, light green and blue, are very effective. Brightly colored paper is available at office supply stores or at photocopy services.
POST ——> In the poster world, if you're posting outside, THE BIGGER - THE BETTER! We want folks to discover Firefly and Serenity — So if you can, PRINT 'EM BIG!! Try enlarging them on the photocopier and print on 11" x 17" color to be really eye catching! If you can't enlarge them, letter size paper is fine... the important thing is to get the word out!
WOW ~ The Posters Really Get Noticed In Color!
Black and white is beautiful, but these posters really JUMP OUT in color! So if you can, use bright, eye-catching color paper for your copies... it WILL make a difference! But if you can't get color paper, don't let that stop you, the posters still work great in black and white.
Where to start POSTIN'!
Post like the cool bands and clubs do ——> Staple the posters on utility poles, construction barricades, sign posts, buildings, stray dogs...
Sci-Fi Conventions! ——> Hand out the mini posters — Place stacks of minis and regular size posters on fan tables, walls, even other fans!
Campuses
Coffee houses
Bulletin boards
Laundromats
Always carry a batch of mini posters with you — they're small, and handy to give out when you're talkin' up Firefly and Serenity. Giving someone a shiny mini poster will help "lock in" your recommendation —— a great reminder for them to check out the DVDs!
Do you work somewhere that involves interaction with lots of customers? See if you can add a mini poster in a bag of purchases — or place a stack of minis next to the register! (Also convenient for jotting down some info for a customer, then *viola* they have a mini poster too!) Offer them as bookmarks too... it's something people keep and it will always be around to give the message... especially for folks who take their books out and about to read.
Place mini posters in library books, newspapers, comic books for folks to find!
There's all kinds of 'targets of opportunity' out there... use your imagination! (Please remember though, if you want to post on private property -- ask first.)
Posters Doin' Their Guerilla Thang...
Here they are... UNRETOUCHED, ACTUAL REAL LIFE photos of the posters doin' the good works out in the world... Click the links and take a look!
You can even place posters on a stop sign post, on an unassuming side street, in a Santa Monica mixed zoning neighborhood, under cover of darkness... as a way of saying, 'Howdy! The fans are still gettin' the word of Firefly out there in the world!'
Guerilla marketing the Firefly and Serenity DVDs is still an extremely effective way to continue to build the fanbase... and the more fans we have, the more incentive for our shiny 'verse to return on a more regular basis. Remember, with each new person who discovers Firefly/Serenity on DVD, we stand an excellent chance of gaining another fan. We see it all the time on the message boards. Folks find FF/S on DVD and become deeply drawn in to the stories, performances and oh, that gorgeous cast. Sometimes it happens so quickly and completely, the person is genuinely surprised... but happy! And with each new fan we have a person who will then tell friends, family, co-workers, startled strangers waiting in line for coffee, and so forth, about this amazing show. It works, we KNOW it does... it's a big part of why fans get a shiny movie from a short-lived TV show. (Helps to have a guy at the helm who's the right kind of crazy to not give up too.) So let's keep it goin'. Now go forth and GUERILLA! Thanks. Yer Art Companion ~ 11th Hourthe11thhour@att.net
